Scouts is about giving Youth the change to lead, with the support of Adults because we’re learning and finding out how we can do new things. We can earn badges to show what we have achieved, and they are something we aspire to wear and have on our shirts. But we can do this because of the Adults who give their time, for no pay, to help us do this. There are few ways that we can formally thank these Leaders and Scouters, but it’s important to remember these people and recognize what they do for us.
In Australia, we have the Adult Recognition Awards – anyone can nominate a Leader, Parent or Adult Helper that gives service to Scouting for one of these. The full list is published every year on August 1st, and an Awards Ceremony is held a few weeks later. The awards recognize service from 12 months (Special Service Award), all the way up to the Silver Kangaroo Award and the National President’s Award. We don’t really thank our Adults enough, so it’s really important to nominate Leaders who deserve it.
Rover Scouts can also be nominated for any of these awards too. Remember that Rovers are also active in other sections or roles in Scouting, like Crew Leader, or working at their Groups, and more.
The lower Awards are more easily awarded, but higher awards like the Silver Koala, Silver Emu, and the Silver Kangaroo need to be approved by National. If a nomination isn’t well written, it’s impossible to have a nomination awarded – so this is a really important job.
We’ve just had the 2016 Ceremony for my State, and we had two Rovers who were nominated and awarded the Rover Service Award (RSA). This is for a Rover who has given 5 years of hard work and service to Rovering, or a non-Rover who has given 10 years of hard work and service to Rovering. It’s a really big deal to be awarded this in Australia, because this is a peer-award – unlike Baden-Powell Scout Award and the Woodbadge, both of which that you can earn yourself.
My Rover Advisor was awarded a high level National Award this year, for the 30 years that he’s been a Cub & Venturer Leader and Rover Advisor, and everything that he does. We, as a Rover Crew, are so proud of him.
Thank you to our Leaders, Parents and Adult Helpers for everything that you do, and continue to do! Click here for the complete list of awardees for 2016
